COACH & TEAM STAFF CERTIFICATION GUIDE (2023-24)

Thank you for stepping up to volunteer your time, skills, and energy!

SSMHA & GMHA have prepared the below Step-by-step guide to help navigate the revised HNL / Hockey Canada Coach certification process.

STEP 1 | Obtain a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

All Coaches/Volunteers must have a valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) on file before helping on the ice, bench, or in the dressing room.

Add your name to the SSMHA or GMHA volunteer letter & attach it to your CRC / VSC submission to waive the $20 fee

If you are registered on the Southern Shore (SSMHA), go to a local RCMP detachment.

If you are registered in the Goulds (GMHA), go to a local RNC detachment or submit your CRC/VSC form online at Online Submission - RNC

The usual turnaround time is 2-3+ weeks, but it can take 6+ weeks at times, so we recommend starting this process no later than August to ensure you receive your checks back in time for the start of the hockey season.

When you receive your CRC/VSC, send a copy to your association's register to ensure it gets uploaded to HCR (Hockey Canada Registry).  If CRCs/VSCs are not uplaoded to HCR within 3 months of the date of the check, you will have to reapply for another one.

CRC /VSC certificates are valid in HCR for 3 years

Hockey NL will not accept a CRC / VSC that was completed for other sports (ie. Soccer NL, etc..)

STEP 2 | Hockey-NL Membership - Screening Application (All Volunteers)

Please complete the entire form (7 pages) found at the link below and send a copy to registrar.ssmha2014@gmail.com if you are volunteering with the SSMHA or registrar@gouldspacers.ca  if you are volunteering with the GMHA.

STEP 3 | Respect in Sport - Activity Leaders (all on ice and on bench volunteers - Lifetime certification)

Respect In Sport (RIS) - Activity Leader Course is a prerequisite for all Coach roles

Create account/login to complete Respect in Sport - Activity Leader's Course

Completion of the course will generate a new HCR profile for all future Hockey Canada Coach activities and certifications

Link to Spordle / HCR My Account Set-Up to create an account and link your HCR profile (family member’s profiles can be linked as well)

Coaches with previous experience should already have the RIS - Activity Leader course certificate in your HCR profile - link to your HCR My Account profile to access

STEP 4 | Register & Complete Coach Courses

All Hockey Canada Coach courses require HU-Online Coach 1/Coach 2 as a prerequisite

Online Registration for all courses; https://register.hockeycanada.ca/clinics (Select HNL from drop-down menu).  More clinics will be posted throughout the season.

The below picture outlines the Hockey-NL Coach and Volunteer Requirement Chart.  Please check to see which courses you are required to complete for your intended volunteer role.

Note: You need Coach 1 for U7/U9 (having Coach 2 or D1 certification does not exempt you from this requirement)

STEP 5 | Get reimbursed for any fees or courses you have paid

To request reimbursement for any courses/clinics, send the payment receipt and a copy of all of your certificates to registrar.ssmha2014@gmail.com if you are volunteering with the SSMHA or registrar@gouldspacers.ca  if you are volunteering with the GMHA.

Please send all questions about these requirements to your respective registrar.

STEP 6 | Register as a Coach with your association

In order to register as a coach for your association, you need to follow the same process as you do when registering your kid(s) for hockey.

To register as a coach for the Southern Shore Minor Hockey Associaton (SSMHA)

To register as a coach for the Gould's Minor Hockey Association (GMHA)

Junior Coaches should also register using this same process
